Job Description Summary:
The City of Columbia is looking for a dedicated Meter Reader I to join our Utilities Department. In this role, you will ensure accurate and efficient readings of water and electric meters across assigned routes while maintaining meter equipment, access, and location data. As a Meter Reader, your work will directly contribute to the City’s operational excellence and customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct water and electric meter readings on designated routes.
- Communicate with customers regarding meter access or potential issues, and collaborate with property managers to ensure seamless access to meters.
- Assist Utility Service Workers by resolving billing concerns and performing audit re-readings.
- Inspect meters and connections for irregularities, malfunctions, tampering, or unauthorized connections.
- Collect GPS data for meter locations and maintain accurate records.
- Submit work orders for any meter servicing needs.
- Respond to public inquiries and complaints in a timely and professional manner.
- Ensure regular attendance to maintain operational efficiency.
Qualifications:
- Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
- Licenses: Valid driver’s license required.
- Skills:
- Proficiency in GPS mapping software and basic typing/data entry.
- Ability to walk long distances (up to 15 miles per day) and work in various weather conditions.
- Strong customer service skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and operate handheld computers and meters.
Work Environment:
- Primarily outdoor work in various environments, including streets and construction sites.
- Frequent exposure to extreme temperatures, including cold (below 32°F) and heat (above 100°F).
- Occasional exposure to loud noises (over 85 decibels) and potentially hostile or irate individuals.
Physical Demands:
- Regular walking, standing, driving, and operating handheld equipment.
- Ability to exert up to 35 pounds of force occasionally and frequently move objects.
- Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, push, and reach with hands and arms.
